This week by day the Pearl and Earl move continues.. and by night I am reclaiming my home studio and giving it a bit of a facelift. Item one on the agenda was a desk, as all our matching desks went up to the new office. We had an old glass top table, which was the right size, but I was not a fan of ‘seeing through’ to the mess below (you may have gathered I am not a minimalist!)
I have been experimenting a lot this season with new projects for a book I have out next year – and one of my very favourite DIY craft stash items is MOD PODGE. Basically it is like PVA but is an all in one glue / glaze making the whole process very quick and easy. It comes in a variety of finishes, including one for fabric, outdoors, glitter, sparkle and of course matt or gloss. My weapon of choice? Gloss.
So I decided to try to decoupage the reverse of the desk to add a bit of pattern to my office space. I chose an old roll of wall paper from my cupboard which was not too busy (work distractions and all that) and set to work!
I simply coated the reverse of the glass and ‘wall papered’ the desk, trimming the edges AFTER it was dry and then applying a second coat on the edges and across the whole backside. The final effect had a mottled aged effect which I personally loved. (note pic below was taken before MOD PODGE dried which is why it is white not clear)
